Margan Albarino 2017

Margan Albarino

Margan Albarino 2017

Albariño comes from Rías Baixas in the Galicia region of north west Spain. Andrew Margan was the first to plant it here in the Hunter Valley in 2014. Galicia is classified as a warm maritime climate and it produces textural wines with low alcohol, high fruit and high acid, just like the Hunter Valley. Being the first Albarino from the Hunter it is hard to know how long this wine may cellar but its balance and structure suggests it will cellar well for many years.

VintageThe 2017 vintage had perfect ripening conditions with gradually increasing temperatures and long daylight hours resulting in beautifully ripe and healthy fruit which allowed harvest in late February.

LocationSingle vineyard wine from the ancient red volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill. Broke Fordwich, Hunter Valley.

Variety Albarino

Tasting Notes

Tropical fruit and spice, succulent acidity with a lingering finish and lifted citrus characteristics.

Best DrinkingEnjoy now as an aperitif. It will develop beautifully over the next 3 to 6 years and live a bit more after that.

More information

After minimal skin-contact we fermented the juice in stainless steel tanks using a small amount of solids and a variety-specific yeast. Extended lees contact post fermentation resulted in a textural complex wine.  Alcohol 11.5%

Margan Merlot 2015

Margan Merlot

Margan Merlot 2015

The Hunter Valley makes soft red wines and  Merlot is an inherently soft variety creating a regional varietal that is soft with full fruit and fullness. Minimal oak has been used to allow the wine to focus on the fruit quality. Margan planted their Merlot behind the winery using cuttings from an old Merlot vineyard.

The experts suggested that this was the wrong thing to do as the vineyard would be unreliable in yield. They were right that it is unreliable in yield but it is very reliable in quality and that is more important than yield. Merlot is a soft variety and the Hunter makes soft red wine so it is a good fit with its dark fruit characters combined with the Hunter spiciness.

Vintage2015 was a tough vintage for certain areas of the Hunter Valley. Rainfall was high, typical of what the Hunter can deliver, but the amazing ability of the vines to withstand these rain events truly astounds. The lead up to harvest was great, cool conditions, dry and lovely fruit set led to great crops at an average yield. Careful selective picking required to ensure the highest quality was achieved.

LocationVines on their own roots and grown on the red volcanic soil of Timbervines Vineyard at Margan in Broke.

Variety Merlot

Tasting Notes True to the variety, this vintage shows plenty of primary fruit characters. The palate is earthy with a touch of spice and the soft tannins rounds it out nicely, adding length for a silky finish.

Best DrinkingAn early drinking style.

More information

The fruit was cool fermented to preserve primary fruit characters and pressed to 1 and 2 year old French and American oak hogsheads to undergo malolactic fermentation. Constant evaluation during time in barrel ensured that we bottled this wine at the perfect time. Audrey Wilkinson Tempranillo 2017

Audrey Wilkinson Tempranillo

Audrey Wilkinson Tempranillo 2017

Audrey Wilkinson Tempranillo comes from the 2017 vintage, which will be regarded as a classic Hunter Valley vintage. Ideal warm growing conditions leading up to vintage, then, after some spring and early summer rains, the vines were healthy and had plenty of foliage. Very dry and hot summer conditions with temperatures over 40 degrees meant the tannin and flavour of the fruit was allowed to fully mature. The 2017 red wines will be full of flavour and highly sought after.

Scarborough The Obsessive Semillon 2017

Scarborough The Obsessive Semillon

Scarborough The Obsessive Semillon from the 2016-2017 growing season which commenced with budburst in early September with a great start following good winter rainfall which filled the soil proile. Spring was warm and canopies ourished with regular rainfall through this period, with flowering occurring in late October in Chardonnay. Conditions were drier than normal through November but regular rainfall in December helped to size up berries and keep canopies fresh ahead of the pre-harvest period. Early January saw a bout of early rain which was again useful to maintain canopy health and from then on conditions were predominately warm to hot and dry.

Scarborough The Obsessive Semillon 2017

Pale green in colour. Grapefruit, lemon, lime, talc and foral notes. Crisp citrus palate lemon/lime/grapefruit from start to finish. Drink now of over the next 8 to 10 years.

The fruit for this wine is only sourced from the Sunshine Vineyard grown one, almost talc like sands.  The grapes were hand picked in the early hours of Wednesday 25th January. Whole bunch pressed. Free-run juice was only used with an extraction of about 500 litres per tonne. The resulting juice was cold settled in stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation was inoculated with cultured yeast and kept at relatively cool temperature of 16°C to help retain the elegant fruit avours.

Once fermentation has completed, Scarborough look to bottle the wine in 6 months.

Scarborough The Obsessive Semillon is available at Scarborough Wine Co, 179 Gillards Road, Pokolbin. Just 10 minutes from The Vintry or online at Scarborough Wine

McLeish Estate Semillon 2017

McLeish Estate Semillon Harvest 2017

McLeish Estate are one of the most awarded boutique Semillon producers in Australia. They create a range of single vineyard semillons acclaimed and celebrated throughout the world. This is true recognition of the premium quality and the attention to detail that is applied throughout the whole winemaking process and McLeish Estate Semillon is a fine example of the signature wine of the Hunter Valley.

McLeish Estate Semillon 2017

The semillon vines at McLeish Estate were planted in 1985 in friable red duplex loam soil at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. These vines consistently produce the purest and brightest signature of Hunter Valley Semillon. Hand harvesting of the 2017 Semillon began on 2 February. Optimal conditions prevailed with long warm days with vintage conditions throughout the white harvest seeing extreme heat waves of 40 degrees plus leading to excellent ripeness and primary fruit characters.

Brilliant bright green tinged colour. Complex lime and lemon zest with fragrant hints of tropical passionfruit and green apple on the nose. Given ageing generous layers of lanolin toasted hazelnut and honey will develop. The palate delivers a vibrant ripe passionfruit and quince providing a wonderful complexity of flavours that are balanced with a seamless fresh citrus lime and lemon leading to a crisp mouth-watering finish.

McLeish Estate Semillon is crafted to display vibrancy and lean acidity in its youth, while cellaring into the next 10 years will reward with the 2017 Semillon developing added complexity and honeycomb texture over time. Enjoy with fresh Sydney Rock Oysters, Kingfish

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2011

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon is named after Chief Winemaker and Managing Director Iain Leslie Riggs, who joined the winery in 1982. Iain has taken Brokenwood from a small 'hobby' winery into the national and international arena, and was the driving force in Brokenwood extending the range to white wines.

The ILR Reserve Semillon is an aged white wine that receives no oak. After tasting the wine over the first three years the decision was made to release at 5 years bottle age, in other words to have some bottle development but capable of aging further. In terms of winemaking it was a case of low (and now, zero) skin contact and neutral yeast. Unfortunately it also corresponded with a decline in cork quality to the point where Brokenwood had to colour sort every bottle before release. Brokenwood moved to screw cap for the 2003 Semillon as it took an extra year to get the Georgian Green bottle for screw cap. Sporadic oxidation robbed us of up to 40% in some years and wasn’t a case of some wines being slightly lesser quality than others, once oxidized, Semillon’s are undrinkable.

After changing to screw cap seals, Brokenwood decided to increase the age on release to 6 years. There could be an argument that it should be 7 or even 8 years before release, but at 6 there is enough bees wax and toast flavours to illustrate that the wine is on its way for long term aging.

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon has been awarded ‘Best Semillon’ in the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion three times, most recently with this 2011 vintage released in October 2017.

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2011

97 Pts / Best of the Best Semillon, James Halliday Wine Companion 2018
1 Platinum Trophy / 1 Gold Medal

At 6 years of age on release, the colour is just starting to show some development with yellow tints complimenting the green edges. Lifted almond bread and the floral notes heading to bees wax and toast. Lively lime juice, Bickford cordial characters and backed by a superb zesty acidity. The magic of Hunter Valley Semillon on display with texture, fruit weight and great length from a wine that sees no oak. Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon is released from the best years and this is a beauty.

Harvesting is all by hand with the fruit crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Neutral yeasts were used for the fermentation, bottled in July. No oak and no malolactic fermentation, only stainless steel.

Enjoy now with Asian food or any seafood especially freshly shucked oysters. The 2011 Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon was released in October 2017 and drinking well now and will improve with further bottle age.

Winemaker Comments

Contrary to most thinking, the Hunter Valley had a perfect lead up to the 2011 vintage. The 2010 calendar year ended at just over 900mm, up on the average of 720mm, with the wettest month being November at 156mm. Then the Valley had a mild and dry December and early January 2011 followed suit with only one day above 40C on the 2nd January. Further hot weather struck around Australia Day resulting in some leaf burn. In a bizarre twist, the Hunter Valley was irrigating madly while most of Australia was under water.

For example, taking a variety, like Semillon, that isn’t normally for everyone and turning it into something that is approachable for everybody. Just like nose-to-tail cooking the brand aims to showcase how varieties can be made into unique, enjoyable styles that previously may have been overlooked.

Usher Tinkler is one of Australia’s most dynamic young winemakers. Along with his grandfather and father, he is apart of three generations of farming expertise; the dairyman, the cattleman and the winemaker. They all share the same name and united passion for the land. As a tribute to this, Usher Tinkler Wines was born. Usher and wife Ebony bought and renovated the original Pokolbin Church, that was built in 1905, to create a place to showcase their new brand. Shifting a gear in the Hunter Valley the wines are authentic yet adventurous. Blurring the lines between traditional and contemporary winemaking. Wines that create discussion – born for sociability.

Nose to Tail White | The Chicken

Hunter Valley Semillon and Chardonnay blend with zesty notes of lemon and lime, we’ve created a refreshing, mineral white that’s rare as hen’s teeth. This artisanal wine blend is equally enjoyed with a roasted Poulet or miso poached chicken
