The 2011 vintage of Tyrrell’s Vat 9 Hunter Shiraz is a blend of Tyrrell’s top vineyards, sourced from the red volcanic soil strip that runs through the Weinkeller, NVC and Short Flat Vineyards, with an average vine age of 50 years.

A late start to Spring which led into a cool November and December, set us up nicely for a good vintage. January brought with it ten days of above average warm weather which helped ripen the fruit perfectly picking began in the second week of February, one week later than the 2010 vintage. The vineyards were picked between 10 and 25 February.

Hand picked and fermented in open top fermenters, the wine was then matured in new and one year old French oak casks (2700L) for 16 months. The parcels were kept separate until blending in December 2011, before going back into wood until May 2012 for bottling.

This is a typical Vat 9 from a good Hunter vintage. It shows a wonderfully lifted nose of red berries and subtle oak. A pretty wine with generous rounded fruit on the palate and a creamy texture that gives the wine an extra element of interest. Medium bodied shiraz at its best.

Bright purple in colour. Fresh savoury spice and lifted red berriy nose with a subtle oak lift. The palate is medium bodied showing soft sweet fruits. The oak enhancing the mid palate which is extended by the fine clean acid structure. A seamless, creamy textured wine in complete balance
