Gartelmann Benjamin Semillon 2013

Founded in 1996 by Jan and Jorg Gartelmann, Gartelmann Wines is a boutique winery set in the heart of the beautiful Lovedale area of the Hunter Valley. After the sale of their vineyards post the 2006 vintage, grapes are now sourced from other Hunter Valley vineyards and some of the best sites in regional New South Wales including the cool Rylstone area in Mudgee.

As well as award winning examples of the classic Hunter varieties of Semillon and Shiraz, Gartelmann Wines have a wonderfully aromatic Verdelho, a complex Chardonnay, a soft Merlot and an elegant Cabernet. Or you may want to head straight to the toffee-citrus sweetness of the dessert Ambrosia or the toasty spice of the Liqueur Muscat.

Gartelmann Wines is a true family owned and operated winery – Jan and Jorg can often be found in the Cellar Door welcoming guests and answering questions. If you are in Lovedale, is is a great place to enjoy a wine tasting in the cool of the Cellar Door in summer or on the sun-dappled deck, or just relax at the Magpie Café by the lily-covered pond with a bottle of fine Gartelmann wine.

For many years the Benjamin Semillon has been one of Gartelmann’s most celebrated and awarded wines. The 2013 Benjamin Semillon is no exception. Made in a traditional Hunter Chablis style from only clean, flavour ripe free run juice, this wine was cold fermented in stainless steel capturing the elegance, finesse and structure that Hunter Valley Semillon is famous for.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from two dry grown blocks of 73 year old vines in the Broke sub region, on alluvial sands that has traditionally produced the Hunter’s best Semillons.

The Hunter 2013 was an excellent vintage for whites, with well below average rainfalls all months from September until 26th of January. From the 27th of January there was over 130mm of rain in three days. Gartellman had havested all their whites by the 26th.

Pale straw colour with a green tinge. The nose has lifted notes of limes and underlying talc. Citrus notes of limes and talc are layered over a seamless acid backbone with a steely complexity on the palate with a clean, yet long and refreshing finish.

A great wine to serve with simple flavoured foods, particularly grilled white fleshed fish. Drink now as a young wine or reap the benefits of cellaring until 2018 for best drinking, or 2021 for maximum aging. Perfect with simple flavoured foods, particularly grilled, white fleshed fish.
