Winemaker, Matt Burton is passionate about single vineyard wines, regional expression and premium grape varietals. He believes well made wine should clearly reflect where the fruit is grown, and tell a story about the particular vineyard and season. He is driven to produce wines that are true to the terroir.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Wine Science from Charles Sturt University, and is currently working to complete an MBA from the same institution. He has been involved at various levels of winemaking and wine business management for the last eleven years. Starting out as a Trainee Winemaker in the Hunter Valley, Matt then gained invaluable experience making wine in the United States and France before heading to Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley. He finally settled at Wandin Valley Estate where he was ultimately promoted to the dual role of Winemaker and General Manager. During his time at Wandin Valley, Matt’s wines gained many accolades, and in 2010, Matt was recognised as the “Hunter Valley’s Rising Star” at the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Awards.

In 2011, Matt left Wandin Valley to run the Gundog Estate wine business and cellar door in the Hunter Valley. Under Matt’s management and winemaking, both Wandin Valley Estate and Gundog Estate have been awarded a prestigious five star winery rating from Australia’s leading wine critic, James Halliday.

Gundog’s unique range of wine is unlike any offering from other Australian wine producers. The decision to focus on contrasting varieties, climates and regions will challenge and delight any serious wine lover.

The 2013 vintage of Hunter’s Semillon is produced from two unique blocks at the highly sought after Somerset vineyard, in the heart of Pokolbin. This fantastic vineyard site, in combination with modern winemaking techniques, serve to produce a modern style of wine which highlights qualities true of great Hunter Valley Semillon; balance, finesse and purity of fruit. Enjoy this Semillon while it is young, or after five years of careful cellar maturation.
