DBHV Village Syrah 2010

De Bortoli’s newest cellar door is in the world renowned Hunter Valley. The historic Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine growing region and produces wines with character and personality and the ability to age gracefully in the bottle. The region is especially famous for its wonderful Semillon wines. These wines will add lustre to the company’s portfolio and complement the Yarra Valley and King Valley wine ranges. The De Bortoli winery is at the gateway to the Hunter directly opposite Broke Road and is the first winery you encounter as you begin your journey into Hunter Valley wine country.

The 26-hectare property including an 800 tonne capacity winery produces the De Bortoli Hunter Valley and Black Creek labels. De Bortoli has purchased the adjoining 100 acre block with the view to future plantings of varieties including Semillon, Shiraz and Merlot and has also purchased a nearby vineyard that has 40 year old Semillon vines.

Vintage conditions for 2010 treated us to fine and mild weather, with dry conditions offering a favourable maturation period and excellent ripening conditions. This allowed fruit of the highest quality to be hand picked at select maturity.

Fruit was sourced from our Wills Hill Vineyard from the blocks planted in duplex brown clay loam soil containing decomposed laterite granite known as Ironstone. Fruit was picked in the cool of the morning by hand and transported to the winery in small 10kg buckets. Hand sorting was then conducted to eliminate sub-standard bunches. 100% fruit was placed whole in a stainless steel fermenter, sealed and then left to its own devices. 100% whole bunch – carbonic maceration, indigenous yeast pumped once daily and pressed after 14 days reaching a maximum of 28°C degrees. 100% French oak (10% new) for six months.

The De Bortoli DBHV Village Syrah 2010 is bright ruby red with a nose of red berries with elegant soft spices, backed up with a hint of graphite. The palate is raspberries and strawberries that are soft, delicate and lingering. Slides along the palate offering drinkability and length.
