The Hunter Valley makes soft red wines and  Merlot is an inherently soft variety creating a regional varietal that is soft with full fruit and fullness. Minimal oak has been used to allow the wine to focus on the fruit quality. Margan planted their Merlot behind the winery using cuttings from an old Merlot vineyard.

The experts suggested that this was the wrong thing to do as the vineyard would be unreliable in yield. They were right that it is unreliable in yield but it is very reliable in quality and that is more important than yield. Merlot is a soft variety and the Hunter makes soft red wine so it is a good fit with its dark fruit characters combined with the Hunter spiciness.

Vintage2015 was a tough vintage for certain areas of the Hunter Valley. Rainfall was high, typical of what the Hunter can deliver, but the amazing ability of the vines to withstand these rain events truly astounds. The lead up to harvest was great, cool conditions, dry and lovely fruit set led to great crops at an average yield. Careful selective picking required to ensure the highest quality was achieved.

Tasting Notes True to the variety, this vintage shows plenty of primary fruit characters. The palate is earthy with a touch of spice and the soft tannins rounds it out nicely, adding length for a silky finish.

The fruit was cool fermented to preserve primary fruit characters and pressed to 1 and 2 year old French and American oak hogsheads to undergo malolactic fermentation. Constant evaluation during time in barrel ensured that we bottled this wine at the perfect time.
